Last Friday, everyone at Maverick got some lovely good news which put us in amazing spirits for the weekend! Two of our authors have had their first picture books nominated for the Heart of Hawick Children’s Book Award.
Amanda Brandon’s first Granny Mutton Yarn story, A Scarf and a Half and Tracy Gunaratnam‘s first story Preposterous Rhinoceros have both been nominated. It is the first award for both of the authors and they’re over the moon. As are the illustrators of each book! Catalina Echeverri has illustrated two Granny Mutton Yarns, A Scarf and a Half and A Box of Socks and is scheduled to illustrate the third, A Knit and a Knot, to be published September 2016. Marta Costa illustrated the charming Preposterous Rhinoceros and this is first book that she has been nominated for. She said:
“It’s the first time my work is in a shortlist for an award!!!… I never thought about it!  I’m really happy”

The books will be read in schools in Hawick area and the winner will be chosen by the children. The Award ceremony will take place sometime in June and fingers crossed there will be a Maverick winner!
